The Colombia Asbestos Free Foundation (FundClas) is a nongovernmental organization in Colombia that advocates for the rights of Colombians to live, without being exposed, to dangerous substances that put their health at risk, as is the case of asbestos under any of your classifications
Since the mid-1940s in the last century, Colombia has used asbestos in different industrial processes. However, it has been proven that the use of this mineral, from the scientific point of view, causes different diseases such as asbestosis, lung, laryngeal and ovarian cancer and mesothelioma (lining of the walls in vital organs such as the lung ), among other types of cancer.
All types of asbestos, including chrysotile asbestos, have been listed by WHO (World Health Organization) within Group 1, that is, there is sufficient evidence of their carcinogenicity in humans.
These are the reasons why FundClas advocates for advancing initiatives that include not only the banning aspect, but also those related to the health of workers and citizens who may be at risk of being directly and indirectly exposed to this dangerous substance. Likewise, we consider that the efforts must be accompanied by policies that know how to account for installed asbestos, its handling, removal and environmental management of asbestos waste.
